Casa Mariana is a restaurant that has been situated in the same spot for over fifty years - across from the beach at Afife and just up the coast from Viano do Castelo.
The décor is typically rustic Portuguese with wood panelling, arches, long pine tables and benches.Upon the rough plastered walls are decorated pieces of pottery mainly large plates with traditional folk designs. There is a light and airy feel to the interior because of the large windows even though they have tie back curtains. Dining areas consist of two rooms which have a seating capacity for 130 guests. The restaurant is suitable for large groups and special festivities and celebrations like weddings and baptisms.
Cuisine is simple but nourishing with the emphasis on fish and seafood. Sea Bass is the house speciality and is steamed rather than grilled and served on a bed of seaweed. You will find that seafood dishes like percebes (goose barnacles), clams, prawns and crab are very popular with the locals. There isn't a vegetarian menu as such but meals can be prepared if ordered before hand. Puddings are always delicious in any region of Portugal but here in the Casa Mariana they make a delicious crème brûlée type of dessert. This is really mouth watering as you can taste the fresh lemons used to give the pudding such a rich citrus flavour. The wine list is very good - nothing to experimental here. Price range is medium and I suggest to try out the Alvarinho wines which are known for their wonderful aromas..
Major credit cards are accepted as well as a Portuguese Multibanco Card. Average price of a meal including wine is around 20 Euros which is very good value in this region of Portugal. Portions are large.
Parking spots are available close to the restaurant. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, second half of September, Xmas Eve and Xmas Day.
