[mehr]This 10th century castle, built on top of a steep rock, overlooking the village of Cabrerolles, was demolished by the troops of Claude de Narbonne, Baron of Faugères, in 1569. Although nowadays, the choice of the castles location seems odd, due to it being far out from the main actual axes, in the forest, in the 10th century it was the main passage from Aveyron, a mountainous area to the north, to the plains of Béziers, and the Mediterranean Sea. A tower at each end remain, amongst the ruins, one to the north, which doubles as the chapels bell tower, and the other looking south, over the vast plain to the sea.
To the north side of the ruins, Notre Dame des Roches, an 11th century chapel, literally plunges to the base of the rock. The chapel was restored in the 17th century, and more recently in 1993 and 1995.
Each year a medieval festival is organised in June, amidst these imposing ruins.
