We were interested in the hotel Asahi since it was cheap for a, it seemed in the downtown and the photos of hotel rooms were very nice.
The first bad surprise was the location. It is walking distance from the central railway station. The area is full of homeless and strange people and I did not feel comfortable in reaching the hotel by foot. The downtown area is reachable in 10-15 minutes walk but it is in fact the border of the city centre. We wanted to see the Rhein river and we had to walk through the whole city centre. We took a taxi to return to the hotel!
There were only two people at the reception and we discovered that it is the trend. Only 1-2 people work at the reception desk and I find it is not acceptable for a four stars hotel. There was no concierge so the reception agents had to help also with restaurants reservations and driving instructions. There was a bar in the lobby but without service, the reception agents had to serve too at the hotel bar when needed. Conclusion: you always had to wait before if was your turn.
The hotel room was very nice and large and we liked it. The furniture was new and blankets and sheets were expressively designed for allergic people. Unfortunately we could hear the car traffic also at night because the hotel is located on a main street.
There is almost no service on the floors. There was no possibility to order some food from the room. We reached the bottom when we called to have a lamp changed (it was broken) and they replied us that there was one person at the reception and that we had to wait until the next day for the exchange!
At the end we spent approx Euro 90-100 per room per night. I believed at the beginning it was a very smart offer but considering what we discovered about the hotel I would not spend more for such service.
Conclusion: it is not a bad choice if you are aware of the hotel disadvantages.
