[mehr]The Memorial Gardens are marked by a monument that stands on the location of Captain James Cook's family home, which was built by his father in 1755. In 1935 this house was completely dismantled and shipped to Australia where it was rebuilt in the Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne.
The monument stands close to the route of The Cleveland Way long distance walk. It is constructed from granite that came from Point Hicks, the first land that was sighted by Cook on his voyage to the New World.
