[mehr]With its strategical position on the Bosphorus peninsula Istanbul can look back on more than 2000 years of history that was influenced by many political, religious and artistic events and changes.
In 1985 the UNESCO has added the Historical Areas of Istanbul, an area of around 7 square miles, to its listing of World Heritage Sites.
The area described reaches from the Golden Horn in the North to the Marmara Sea in the South and from the land walls of the city in the West to the Bosphorus in the East.
Some of the cities main attractions, many of them threatened today by pollution and uncontrolled urbanisation, can be found in this area. The main conservation areas of the World Heritage Site are divided in four distinctive main areas:
The Archaeological Park and Hippodrome, Süleymaniye and Shezade Mosques and the associated Conservation Area, Zeyrek Mosque (formerly church of the monastery of Pantocrator) and its associated Conservation Area, the Land Walls of Istanbul with their 96 towers, gates and various religious complexes which are located nearby.
All of the main attractions in Istanbul are in close to public transport facilities. Please note that many are subject to admission fees and that it will be necessary to remove your shoes before entering any of the mosques.
