[mehr]The Ocean City Boardwalk is more officially known as Atlantic Avenue. It dates back to 1902, when it was a temporary structure connecting a handful of oceanfront hotels. At that time, the hotels it fronted rolled up the boardwalk at high tide and stored it on their porches. The first permenant boardwalk, constructed in 1910, was only 5 blocks long.
The Boardwalk as it exists today is 2½ miles long, and it fronts dozens of oceanfront hotels, restaurants, pubs, arcades, and shops from South 2nd Street at the inlet to 27th Street. South of 5th Street, the Boardwalk is paralleled by a concrete strip on the ocean side that accommodates the "train" (more accurately, an open-air shuttle). North of 5th, the Boardwalk allows for two pedestrian lanes and a center lane to accommodate the "train." The shuttle operates during the summer season.
Near the south end of the Boardwalk is a pier and two amusement parks,Trimpers Rides and Jolly Roger at the Pier. There is also the Life-Saving Station Museum that preserves the history of both the community and the local branch of the U.S. Life-Saving Service.
