Parque Natural do Alvao is in the north west of Portugal, north of Vila Real and one of Portugal's smallest natural parks. The park spreads across the ridge of the Serra de Alvao and between the rivers Tamega and Corgo. On the lower slopes you will come across long horned-cattle herded by farmers who live in small stone houses with thatched roofs. The higher slopes of the hills of Alvao are wild, rugged and incredibly beautiful.
The main tourist destination in these parts is the spectacular waterfall which is on the River Olo and near to the pretty, ancient village of Ermelo. The cascading water falls 300 metres down the rocky terrain and is literally breathtaking to watch..
The visitor centre relating to the park is in the town of Vila Real and here you can pick up information in leaflet form regarding the walks and footpaths. The leaflets are usually in Portuguese which isn't very helpful if you are unable to speak the language. From my own experience I can say that the footpaths are not well mapped and walking in this park is for the intrepid tourist only..
Mondim de Basto, a small pretty mountain town in the Parque Natural do Alvao is famous for its annual festival and pilgrimage. In the month of July thousands of people gather in the town to join in five days of festivities which include traditional and modern dancing, music, plenty of food and wine, the wearing of local costumes, brightly embroidered and a huge firework display on the evening before the final day. The last day is then celebrated by a procession walking deep through the forest to the pretty high mountain chapel of Sao Cristovao where Mass takes place. The views from this tiny chapel are stunning.
The address for the visitor centre is: Praca Luis de Camoes 2, Vila Real. Open Monday - Friday.
