Playa del Carmen (Playa del Carmen, Mexiko)

Playa del Carmen is a city on the coast of the Caribbean Sea in the north east of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is 35 miles south from Cancun. This was originally a small fishing town but with time has developed into a popular scuba diving destination. It has the same quality beaches and turquoise waters as its neighbour Cancun but without all the crowds of people. Several cruise ships dock here and in recent times a theme park has opened here called Xcaret. Playa del Carmen has, just a short distance from the beach, a chain of boutique hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. There are opportunities for tourists to visit the underground caves for snorkelling or to explore the island of Isla Mujeres. There are various forms of transport available here for the tourist to get to places of interest; for example there is the bus that can take you to places such as Tulum, Coba or Chichen Itza where there are ancient ruins. There is a bus which is set up solely for the use of tourists who wish to go snorkelling. A ferry service is available that takes you to the main reef in Cozumel. Other bus services that take you to Cancun depart every 15 minutes.
